MorrisonUC Riverside The El Edén Settlement Survey, begun in 1996, is examining the ancient Maya communities associated with the El Edén wetland and nearby cenotes. Preliminary data suggest that the area was occupied during the late Pre-Classic (100 BC - AD 400). Ongoing studies will investigate social and environmental reasons for the apparent abandonment of El Edén during the Classic period when Cobá was growing in size and power. Excavations will also attempt to identify wetland products, such as fish, turtles, or periphyton that were possibly used by ancient residents of the area. |
