ECOSYSTEM STUDIES

A major study comparing the Everglades and northeast portion of the Yucatan Peninsula could be a very important research project. There are several on-going ecological studies on the Everglades evaluating the human impact on this ecological region that has been identified as a major ecological disaster. The northeastern portion of the Yucatan Peninsula has many ecological similarities to the Everglades of the past. Initial studies on fish at El Eden have revealed the same species or pairs of very similar species.

The Yucatan site (with the exception of Cancun) has not been impacted by major urban developments. However, the present trend may point in the same direction. Thus the comparative study of both regions could be of great importance.

A major multi disciplinary and multi-institutional proposal should be prepared for possible funding.
